Sarone Ole Sena

Sarone Ole SenaDr Sarone Ole Sena is Regional President, East Africa, Global University for Lifelong Learning, based in Nairobi, Kenya.

Sarone graduated from the University of Nairobi, Kenya and undertook graduate studies at the University of Cambridge, UK (M Phil), McMaster University, Canada (MSc) and then at McGill University, Canada (PhD). His doctoral studies focused on leadership and change amongst the Maasai of East Africa. He has taught at Primary (1969-72), High School (1977-78), College (1976) and University (1981 -) levels and he is currently an Adjunct Professor at universities in the USA and in Kenya. He teaches and facilitates learning in management, research methods, anthropology and sociology (among other subjects) and he has pioneered community-based learning in East Africa.

Sarone has worked in senior leadership roles for a number of organizations, including Compassion International where he was Learning and Support Director for Africa and World Vision International where is currently the Regional Educational Advisor. He has authored a number of books for NGOs on topics like: How to start and manage a small business; How to communicate effectively; Managing people in community projects; Simple accounting in projects; Monitoring and reporting; An appreciative approach to organizational development and Using appropriate technology in community.

Sarone has a passionate desire to nurture and develop the rich cultural heritage and knowledge that resides in rural communities throughout Africa. He is an experienced action learner and among other projects, he led the ‘University goes to the village’ initiative in Kenya to encourage and recognize practical forms of professional development. This experience coupled with his extensive teaching and learning career and his vision for GULL in Africa enables him to be a passionate and persuasive advocate for GULL’s mission in facilitating universal access to learning in the community.
