World Vision International (WVI)

World Vision is a Christian relief, development and advocacy organisation dedicated to working with children, families and communities. As the world’s largest agency in this field, World Vision works in partnership with more than 100 million people in nearly 100 countries in their struggle against poverty, hunger and injustice, irrespective of their religious beliefs. World Vision (WV) have affiliated with the Global University for Lifelong Learning (GULL) to provide a global capacity building system.

Our goal is to professionalize and recognize the contribution of community volunteers and staff through action learning. ‘Capacity building’ is a process that enables people to develop in contextually appropriate ways and our vision is to encourage self-directed individual and community development.

WV and GULL

At a start-up meeting held from 24-26 January, 2011, six members of World Vision began their own GULL journey, led by Micael Olsson, WVI’s Director, Education & Life Skills and Elinor Alexander, WVI’s Capacity Building Advisor. The objective during the first phase was to determine individual learning needs and then to achieve at least one personal objective by working with a learning coach, by sharing insights and experiences and by developing expertise in using GULL’s learning cycle method.

The team are now continuing the journey to their level 5 award (Doctor of Professional Studies (Leadership Development) by leading the implementation of the WV- GULL system - globally. The main objective is to cascade the system to community volunteer level but also to model leadership development pathways for staff, linked to WV’s performance agreement and review process.
