Jonathan Welford

Jonathan WelfordJonathan Welford is Network Leader, Guatemala, Global University for Lifelong Learning, based in Chimaltenango, Guatemala.

After obtaining a Bachelor degree in International Development from the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom, Jonathan spent four months in Costa Rica followed by a year and a half Bolivia volunteering with Viva; an organization that works with projects through networks to develop their quality, unity and impact, bringing them closer together to offer the best possible care to children in need around the world. Jonathan volunteered with a number of 'Early Encounter' projects and interventions, helping prevent children at risk developing a street lifestyle.

After receiving a Master degree in Social Development from the University of Sussex, Jonathan moved to Guatemala to facilitate the development of Young Adults With Purpose In Guatemala - a movement of young adults aged 18 to 25 who have recently left childcare. The movement aids young adults in their transition from childhood to adulthood and equips young adults to be self-reliant and financially independent.

Jonathan believes that GULL’s approach can be a catalyst in facilitating change in the lives of communities and young adults in Guatemala. He adds: “There are many marginalized communities and young people in Guatemala lack direction, feel ‘stuck’ and have little desire or motivation to change. If the attitudes of communities (and crucially their young people) change they can in turn facilitate mobilization and transformation for others and for future generations. GULL can certainly help to achieve this."
